be prepared to laugh

My good friend Amy Lowrey (heeeyyy!) sent this to me and I just had to post it to share with my blog readers so you can have a good laugh. It's very hard for me to bump my NKOTB video from the top of my blog, especially after just getting home from a reunion with the friends who went to the concert with me, but it's just that good. If you like The Soup, you should check You Tube for the little blurb Joel did on this. Enjoy (and keep some kleenex handy in case you laugh so hard you cry).

A little taste of NKOTB

Here's a little taste of what we experienced at the New Kids on the Block Concert. It's a shortened version of several of the songs.

Hummus

When a "Stuff White People Like" post makes me laugh out loud, I must post it on my blog. In light of my potential food allergies (yet to be named if I have any), it was especially funny.

dumpster diving

today at work we had to introduce ourselves to our team (which has several new members) with a fact about us that no one in the group knew. for some reason, partially because of a story another person shared, i came up with this one (which i'm elaborating on for the sake of my blog and tapping into some creative energy).

i used to play a lot of imaginary games with my friends as a kid - house, school, office, and library were the most common. i never forayed into playing church like my friend tammy, but i'd like to think i was just as creative as she was. the most common imagination game was school, and my friend kim olson and i both had great classrooms set up in our unfinished basements. i had 2 real school desks at my house, on old-fashioned one like laura ingalls wilder, and another modern one with the lift-up desk lid and the hole in the bottom of the desk that you had to cover so your lunch ticket wouldn't fall through and onto the floor, to be lost forever when kids run by and the air sweeps it away (that happened to me once). at kim's house, she may have had a chalkboard, but all i really remember is this great giant spool that you'd likely have loads of rope wrapped around, and we used it as a teacher's desk. (side-note: they also had a great hanging wicker chair in their basement, which i thought was the coolest thing ever). so one spring, kim and i came up with the great idea to head to oscar howe (our school) the day after school was out to dive in the dumpster to get old papers the teachers threw out. we figured we'd have great assignments to give to our imaginary students (who were often played by our younger brothers who were roped in to playing with us). i don't actually remember climbing in or out of the dumpster but i do know we had backpacks full of papers that we used all summer long. it's possible there are still papers from that summer stuck in with the rest of the games and toys that remain in our basement. i think it's one of the best ideas my friends and i had to entertain ourselves, along with "taste tests", "hand soccer", and the creation of a neighborhood library in our treehouse.

i wonder if diving in that dumpster is what has caused me to have such a sensitive gag reflex...

Manifest Obama

I encourage you to think critically about how you will be voting in this election. Please don't select your vote only because you dislike the current president or because of a candidate's view on one issue. Who do we need leading our country? Let that be your guide.

I truly believe Obama is what our nation needs. Check out this great video...if you agree with me, let's manifest Obama into office.

Go....

...to see The Dark Knight. I didn't want to go for fear of "the joker" nightmares, but I think Heath Ledger is a great actor, esp. after seeing his Brokeback Mountain performance, and I also have had a crush on Christian Bale since 1987. So I went. And I am very glad I did. Summer blockbuster. Go to see it. It's good. About a half hour too long, but good. You'll regret it if you don't.

I'll be back with more recommendations such as The Hills Season 4, which premieres on August 18.

a midsummer night's post

so i'm meandering through my internet sites and noticed some friend updates on blogs and stuff and got the final nudge from tammy's comment that it's about time for an update on my life.

lots has been going on the last few months. i have had a few friends in town visiting, which is always nice. i helped (and i use the word "help" very loosely) my friend brad move in to a new condo (yay for single people being able to afford homes on 1 income!!). and a cute condo, i might add. i am still dealing with allergy stuff. i have allergic reactions every week or so, sometimes minor and sometimes major, which involve some sort of facial or mouth swelling. the most recent stuff has been a slight swelling of my chin/cheek or a swollen eye, treatable with benadryl. i am keeping a journal of everything i am eating/feeling and have been tested on a bunch of foods and all we've come up with is an allergy to carageenan, which is a seaweed used as a thickener in dairy products and a few other things. so i'm now off soy milk, soy yogurt, coffeemate and ice cream and anything else that contains carageenan. who knows. i'm not convinced this is a food thing and wonder if it may be connected to stress. so until my next ER visit, i just keep journaling and taking my generic zyrtac at night, and carrying my epipen wherever i go. fingers crossed this is just a seasonal airborn thing.

work has been a little intense and cool. i am getting 1/2 of a referral bonus because another friend started (brad and i will share the bonus since it's a mutual friend). we have also made some major changes to the way we're coaching on our campus. these changes have been a lot of work--we're definitely overloaded right now. i also got a promotion, which is notable. :) i am now a senior coach, one of 6 on our campus. in the ideal world, this means i will coach students 85% of my time and do other tasks 15% of the time, hopefully focused mainly on training coaches on our campus during that 15% of the time. in reality, right now i'm still 100% of the time a coach until we get some additional coaches for our campus to help with the overload. i'm at about a B- job satisfaction-wise, which may increase as i get into more of the 85/15 role. i'm still thinking this isn't my final career stop, so we'll see what the next year holds for me career exploration-wise. i did buy a GRE book and may study for and take those in the next 6 months in case i decide to head on for a phd/edd.

i had a couple of wonderful coworkers leave in june, and that was tough. i really enjoyed working with them and laughing at the absurdity of our company/office life in the u.s. one of them introduced me to Stuff White People Like and the other would send me random (gross) pictures of carrot top (yes, the comedian). they brought great "levity" (to use one of our office trend-words) to my days. so i'm hoping to be the levity-bringer in the office now that they're gone, since i'm fun and funny. i have a few partners in crime to help me out. :) fort day, here we come!

the only other real excitement in my world is that i bought a new laptop. and yes, this is very very exciting. my first apple purchase was my 2001 iBook that i bought right before my move to spokane. that little guy lasted well until about a year ago when i realized it was slow as molasses. then my spacebar started sticking in april (around the time of the allergy attacks...huh...coincidence?) and it became apparent i needed to upgrade or i'd spend half of my typing time hitting the spacebar over and over and over until it worked (it's amazing how much we use that key). so i used my tax refunds and my economic stimulus check to buy a new MacBook (after, of course, investing a good $1500 in car repairs to take care of the higher priority first). i am now addicted to tv on hulu since i can finally watch videos on my computer.

that's about it for now!

(p.s. did you like all my links? i just figured that out tonight. :) )

They're back!

I fear it will be lame, either because I am now 33 (by then I'll be 34) years old or because it actually IS lame. Or both. Nonetheless, I'll be checking it out.

...also

also in april:
i got to go to urgent care last monday late because my bottom lip was swollen to thrice it's usual size. i am allergic to something, likely a food i ate for lunch. now i am paranoid and hoping to get some tests done if my insurance will cover it. in the meantime, i am avoiding grapes and all nuts because i think one of those may have caused the reaction. however, the slightest feeling of tingling or tightness in my throat is setting me on edge. i look forward to hearing back from kaiser's "ask-a-nurse" and will keep you posted. it's going to stink if i have a peanut allergy. ugh.

April (so far)

The month has been busy already. Here's a quick summary (with some pics).

I moved to a side-office from cube-land in our Suite. The pro: I face the river (see previous posts for my view--it's pretty kick-ass) and I sit in an office with funny funny people. The con: I no longer sit by Sam and Jim, my lifelines, and the side-office is actually more distracting than the cubes--there are 4 of us in a room and it can get loud or we just talk instead of work. But I'll learn to be productive this week--I have lots to do.

I have started spring cleaning/home improvements. Last weekend, I bought a patio set--table and 4 chairs--so that I can start having people over for meals and drinks. I cleared out the dead plant I inherited and planted some flowers which may die tonight because it's really cold. Most importantly, though, I cleaned the moss off the wall that separates me and Harriet. It looks REALLY good. After all of this, I decided to name my patio "The Regal Beagle" (in honor of the great Three's Company hot-spot). Get ready for an invite to Happy Hour once the weather warms again.

My friends Brad and Moira both bought condos a few weeks ago. It was exciting to walk with them through that process. They both applied to the show House Hunters after our realtor proposed the idea, and Brad is actually going to be on it (with his good friend Moira having a cameo or two)! Filming is in June, I believe. I'll let you know so you all can set your TiVo.

This past week was our annual-ish Company Meeting. This year it was in Portland. It was 3 packed days but a GREAT time. It was great to feel like I knew a bunch of the San Francisco people from the last meeting. It was motivating and made me really excited to be part of InsideTrack. I'll come to work Monday with renewed motivation for my current role and whatever else I have coming down the road.

I decided to take a day off Friday since I haven't had a vacation in a while. I knew I'd need to recover from the Company Meeting. Instead of doing nothing all day, I decided to finally do a little painting in my condo. Here are some before and after shots. I painted my bedroom and 2 hallways. It's really nice to have something other than blue all over my place. I like the blue, but not THAT much. I do have to say that painting is hard work. I am very sore and I think I used muscles I never knew I had. It's amazing the leg workout you get when you are standing on a step-stool and gripping with your feet for dear-life because you're terrified you'll fall 2 feet (sad, but that is how afraid of heights I am).

Well, the next few weeks will continue to be busy. I have people visiting for the next 3 weekends, so I'm going to take it easy tomorrow.

24 minus 1

If I had done this yesterday, I could've posted Switchfoot's "24". OK, maybe I will anyway because I love that song.

Anyway, news of the night:
only 23 sleeps until a new episode of The Office! (Cheers!)

Here's the vid, with a shout out to Warren RAs 04-05; this makes me think of you.

good times, great oldies

I sent a dcTalk video to a couple of coworkers yesterday as a joke (Hu-hu-heavenbound, anyone?) so today I had to show one of them that their music progressed a bit. So, in honor of my old obsession, I thought I'd revisit one of my favorite songs. It brings back great memories of college and that concert where my friends and I got t-shirts made before the show.

Falling Slowly

Here is the clip of this beautiful song that won Best Original Score. The lyrics (below) are poignant to me today.

I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You've made it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You've made it now

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing along

Academy Awards Recap

Well, the Oscar party (read: Ann and Brad go to the Stahleys and watch it on their new giant TV) just got done and I decided to recap because I took some notes of highlights. This is my attempt to emulate IBBB (see "Celebrity..."link at right).

*Note 1: this is significant that I am doing this because my spacebar is busted and sometimes i have to hit it several times for it to work. iMac, here I come.
*Note 2: SPOILER ALERT. Ifyou don't want to know winners, stop reading.

Red carpet highlight: Gary Busey accosts Jennifer Garner and she doesn't even try to hide her fear. It was a mix of crazy + I want to be sure to get on camera.

John Stewart is ALWAYS funny. He's still my original Jewish boyfriend.

I love that Enchanted had 3 nominations and they reenacted them. The Amy Adams performance (of the3)was the best, mainly because she was so good in the film.

We learned that celebs have wrinkles and Brad is not the only person in the world with crows feet(ok, HE learned).

The food was tasty: wraps, pizza, raspberry tart, fruit and cheese plate, chocolates, and spaghetti squash, which Brad said was too crunchy.

My favorite of the night: my NEW Jewish boyfriend Seth Rogen and his mini-me Jonah something-of-other are introduced as Halle Berry and Dame Judy Dench and spend their monologue arguing over which of them is more Halle-like. They are funny and the clip will make my blog if it ends up on YouTube.

Javier Barden wins best supporting actor, the first of several wins for the film, and I am thankful that I saw it. He was REALLY good.

We play a new game called "Seen It". It is similar to the shout-out-the-name-during-the-montage game. They showed every film that won best picture and we yelled "Seen it"if we had seen it, "Own It"if we own it, and a few times we added "LOVEd IT". It was funny.

John Stewart is funny. It's like he has a hidden camera in our place. After the film editing award,he says "Someone just took the lead on their Oscar pool based on a guess." Funny thing is: I had actually seen the movie and knew it would win.

Once: I liked this movie, Brad and Nic did not (in fact, hated it). I LOVED the main song and thought it would win. After mocking the song, Brad and Bill did NOT get a point for picking a winner--I did: it won best original score. The girl didn't get to share her speech so they let her come back after the commercial to say live your dreams, this is for all of the independent artists and musicians. It was sweet.

Final highlight:as expected, Diablo Cody won for her screenplay for Juno. I wish Ellen Page had won best actress but knew that was a long shot, so at least the woman who created the character Juno won. And her acceptance speech was sweet.

It was all anticlimactic from there. No Country for Old Men won everything, and it deserved it. And I vowed to watch more movies this coming year because I had barely seen anything up for awards this year.

**I am going to kill my spacebar.**

ok, ok, ok

turbotax/intuit may have just redeemed themselves with good customer service and refunding me. next weekend (after getting my refund) i will try a new option.

i just wanted to know TODAY if i am going to have to pay in to help me decide if i can buy some new boots. i'm going to buy the boots anyway because i have had ocd about them for 4 days.

problem solved.

ugh

i really hate technology. i hate doing taxes and i'm way stressed about doing them with this condo purchase on this year's return. so tonight i decide to just do it now and get it done and i decide to buy turbotax, which i have used EVERY YEAR for the past 4 years. on my mac. no problems. so i go to open the little icon after buying and downloading the software and it tells me "system incompatible". after scouring the turbotax website, i discover they require mac os 10.4 or newer. well, i HAVE THAT, i just can't effing install it on my computer because my computer has no memory because it's old. grr. so i'm waiting for an e-mail back to see if i'm going to be charged the $45. i'm tired of online software ordering being tricky with the buyer and hiding the software requirements. this could be $200 now that i've basically thrown away. sure, i should've looked for the details, but i've never had any problems before so i wouldn't think this year would be any different. you'd think they'd post it if there are any limitations...that's the kind of service they provide, USUALLY. that's why i keep going back.

i'm going to chose to be completely irrational and blame this on george bush...it has to do with my taxes, which have to do with him. it will make me feel better if i can blame this on him. :)

randomness at work

random silly stuff at work:

"This Door is Shocking" so someone put a mustache on it to help. Why this mustache was originally on the fridge door is beyond me.

This is our team mascot, affectionately named "Call Rex" (which is also the name of our call recording software).

Jim added the word "Key" to the "Takeaway" menu to create my least favorite InsideTrack coachy-coach phrase "Key Takeaways". The mockery brings a smile to my face whenever I look at it.

The mug I got from being on the DeVry E-mail Reminder Committee. On the back it says "Ann, witty and wise". It was a very thoughtful gift.

Daily sustenance: Kobos coffee (in my RightTrack mug, of course, so I'm good to the environment) and water in my Nalgene

thinking

so my little brother turns 29 tomorrow. it's his golden birthday (turning 29 on the 29th).

when mark turns milestone ages, i feel old. i know, i'm really not. i was talking with a coworker today who was signing on a house and we were noting that we are doing these "adult things" but we don't feel like we're old enough to be doing them--specifically buying homes and getting gray hair. but we're doing them and it's our reality.

i'm thinking again (like i do every january) about what i want to do when i grow up. i am not really sure what that looks like. long ago, i thought by now i'd be back in school again and maybe working on a campus and doing some teaching. i don't know why it has always felt like my "place" but it is my image of the Ann that is working into retirement. so i'm thinking this january about exploring phd programs. i know, i know. it's a lot of work and big "real adult" stuff. and i'd have to figure out how to do it while working since i have to pay my bills. but i'm just exploring, and i may find it will be easier than i think. so i may take the GRE to get that out of the way (studying first, of course).

k, i'm off to bed. i'm weary this week and need to find some energy through sleep so i can turn that around. blessings, friends!

New stuff

I was browsing with Brad at Target this weekend and happened upon some nice dishes that were a) screaming out to me and b) on sale. I've been wanting to replace my cheap Shopko dishes for a while and I also had some cash from my grandparents from Christmas, so Brad was quickly able to talk me into buying them. Now I'll have to have people over who can enjoy them. :)

1 month of movies + 2 others worth noting

I have watched a LOT of movies in the last month. It started when I got home and learned that my parents had HBO and DVR. It's like Disneyland for someone like me who doesn't even have cable. Here are the movies I watched while in Sioux Falls (and yes, I did actually leave the house quite a bit):
1. The Departed: though this is a movie I've seen and it's very bloody, it's a GREAT STORY about a dirty cop and another secretly infiltrating a mob group. I've wanted to see it again, knowing how it ends, so it was nice to not have to pay to re-watch it.
2. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: Mark and I keep saying we want to watch this with the fam at Christmas, and this year we finally did. It is STILL so funny.
3. The Princess Bride: I wasn't obsessed with this movie like my college friends, but when my Dad and I had a night at home and I learned he hadn't seen it, I told him we had to watch it. I think he got a laugh or two from it.
4. A Prairie Home Companion: I wanted to see this even though I hadn't ever listened to the show on NPR. My parents and I watched it and I'm hoping it got them excited about going to a recording in Minneapolis (they have tickets!). Note: I AM listening to the radio show on NPR as I type this. :)
5. Dan in Real Life: I went to see this with my friends Tami and Danyelle at the cheap theater in Sioux Falls. It was VERY GOOD. I LOVE Steve Carrell. I'd recommend it and will likely buy it.

When I got back to Portland, the Urban Family New Year's weekend started. Here are the movies from that weekend (we packed a lot in):
1. Once: this is an indie/european movie about 2 people who meet randomly and record music together. It's a musical, lots of music and very slow moving. I really liked it but the others did not.
2. Juno: this is my favorite movie I've seen in months, maybe all year. Sure, it is about teenage pregnancy and a couple dealing with infertility, but it is FUNNY and witty and sharp and sweet. The soundtrack is great (with a lot of music by Kimya Dawson, who I hadn't heard of before). Highly recommended movie, if you like quirky stuff like The Royal Tennenbaums or Napoleon Dynamite.
3. Stardust: this was the hit of the weekend for us. It's a fairytale in the vein (vain) of The Princess Bride about a fallen star, a prince, and a witch with an all-star cast.
4. The Namesake: I had heard lots about this on NPR's Fresh Air (see Terry Gross link to the right) and looked forward to the meaningful story. It's exactly what you'd expect in a story about a young man dealing with his family heritage v. US culture. P.S. His girlfriend is played by Jacinda from The Real World London.

All this movie watching made me realize I don't go out to movies a lot and I never rent them (expensive!) but I LOVE movies. So I joined Blockbuster Online. :) I have already caught 3 and have many more on the way:
1. Waitress: this is about a waitress in an abusive marriage who gets pregnant and has an affair. It's quite funny. It's also tragic--the woman who wrote and co-starred in the movie was tragically and randomly killed before it got to theaters.
2. A Mighty Heart: This is the movie about the wife of a reporter who is held hostage. Good Oscar-type movie. It's exactly what you expect from the previews and it's not a "must see" but it's good.
3. Hairspray: It just felt like a movie to see since I saw the original one years back. Very campy, light, funny. I was laughing and cheesing through most of it.

A couple of other really good movies I saw earlier this year are worth noting. These are strong recommendations:
1. Enchanted: I think EVERYONE should see this. It, like Hairspray, is very campy but it is the most feel-good movie I've seen in a while. It's about an animated princess who falls into the non-animated world and is searching for her prince. Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey are great.
2. Into the Wild: Quite the opposite of a feel-good movie, this is a movie about a college grad who takes off to find meaning in the world having grown up with a materialistic family. His aim is to live alone in Alaska in the wilderness. This is a true story, very interesting.

That's the end of my long post on movies. :)

commentary on life (as in, my so-called)

so,if you haven't ever watched DVD commentaries, you may want to.i am not sure i'd recommend doing it on EVERY DVD(read:could be a waste of time),but the ones you're a true fan of can be super educational.for me,that would involve the office and freaks and geeks...i think i've watched them all...and now my so-called life.i am not sure i'd ever make it through a whole movie commentary.maybe reality bites or juno or the royal tennenbaums (depending if there are wilson brothers and benny-ben stiller on that last one;they crack me up).

anywho,i learned something interesting on "so-called angels" last night.wilson cruz's story line in that episode(the christmas episode if you're stuck on the title going"huh?")basically happened to him a year earlier(minus the guardian angel played by juliana hatfield...man,that would be cool to have j.h.as your guardian angel though)but the writers didn't know that when they wrote the episode.he said it was a pretty surreal and difficult experience for him to relive getting kicked out of his house for being gay.

man, watching DVD commentaries makes me feel smarter, like npr.i also think this activity makes me more attractive.

also, erika christensen is on law&order right now.how long have i stopped watching this show?wait, maybe she's a guest star.i'm not actually watching it.

in conclusion, this blog or my computer is pissing me off because it takes my words like 10 seconds to catch up with my 60 wpm typing.LAAAAA-AAME!still,i press on.

eek!

i effed up my blog layout yesterday while adding a link to my friend's music blog. i will fix it when i have patience to learn html via some online cliff's notes "help" of some sort. maybe wikipedia can help (it is, apparently, awesome, according to michael scott).

also, apparently i have posted 197 times since starting this blog. that is some crazy stuff.

also, it is like a hurricane here. i am hoping the power stays on...the streets were off-and-on blacked out on my drive home (yes, i had to work in the office this week...also i get to next friday...)

in conclusion, if you see the Box Man (ups) trying to deliver the package my dad mailed me last friday w/ all my xmas gifts, please let me know. i'm eager to remember what i got for gifts besides my "my so-called life" dvd set and ugg boots.
